Getting Upgraded to Business Class for Free...

OK, if you want to get a free business class upgrade on every flight you take, then you might as well keep dreaming. There is no guaranteed way of getting upgraded, but there are some guidelines you should try to follow.

Number one is to ask. When you initially check in for the flight, the person on the till will know what the chances are, so see if they can swing anything for you. Be polite, smile, and enquire - ask if there is "any chance of getting an upgrade". If there is they will tell you. If there isn't, don't get angry.

Number two, look the part - remember that the other people in business class have paid through the nose to get their seat, and don't want a slob getting put in with them. Look smart and you are far more likely to get shifted up the plane.

Number three, If you haven't got an upgrade on the ground, don't panic, you can still get one in the air. One thing I've tried on a crowded plane is to call over a stewardess and feign claustrophobia, the last thing any member of staff wants is a panicking passenger, if they have a seat free, they can move you - don't expect full service in business class though - it ain't gonna happen.

Number Four, Don't be unrealistic. If you have booked a cheap flight and paid the lowest fare, then you are less likely to get an upgrade than someone who paid full price.

Number Five, Join the Frequent flier club for the airline, and give yourself a title. On my Emirates membership, I'm Sir XXXXXXXXXX, it raises an eyebrow at check in, but often counts in your favour. Be careful though, if you do try this one, you need to act the part!
